For years the North School Preservation Society has worked to save the old grade school in North Springfield and the 5 acres of public recreation land associated with it from being sold off for private development. The efforts have finally come to fruition, and the big moment came this week on Tuesday when the Springfield School District transfered full legal ownership of the property to the North School Preservation Society, nsps.awardspace.us, at 10:00 a.m. in the law offices of Brady and Callahan, in beautiful downtown Springfield, Vermont.

There was quite a festive atmosphere at this happy event, many flash bulbs were sacrificed, and a bottle of champagne was nearly popped!

Springfield Vermont has a brand spankin' new, old-fashioned box cantilever bridge in the works. Fancy News indeed, and a pleasure to watch the able crew briskly put together the huge set of elements that is enough to make any grown child regard with a bittersweet envy the delicious fun of assembling the shiny, zinc-dipped construction. One worker took a moment to describe succinctly the meaning behind all the activity, what with the electric lines being played with and the sudden appearance of a giant Tinker Toy set - this is available on the video, please see it here, and for a feel of the part that that original bridge played in the local context, see this too.

Today, Springfield Vermont held it's annual SHS Alumni Day Parade - it went off without a hitch (except for the fact that it was late). Nature blessed the day with beautiful weather, and all had a great time (especially the clowns!). Bongo the Goat was in attendance, as well as every other character you might expect to see.

Anyone caring to share an image of the parade is invited to submit it through the facebook page for this site, and if it passes muster and doesn't need too much editing, we will include it here for your friends away from home to see and enjoy.

Everything is popping in Springfield, Vermont. Today traffic was backed up in historic proportions, due to all the progress - heavy machines are producing changes beneath the pavement surrounding the Movie Theater as it approaches it's Grand Opening date, and Springfield's other finest, the Springfield Fire Department, was busy testing the new addition to the fire suppression system, a dry hydrant, serving Downtown and the developments at 100 River Street.

Springfield's Fire Chief, Russ Thompson, was on hand to give a brief explanation of the dry hydrant component of our fair town's fire suppression system, as recorded for you here -

This should definitively put to rest the rumors - rumors that erupted "like mushrooms in the far meadow after a moon-lit night" after the Black River was diverted one day late last Summer (supposedly to relocate the lost riverwalk access to the legendary long lost cheese caverns of Springfield, Vermont, where a particularly fine Cheddar was said to be produced long ago, long before the trade was outsourced) - rumors to the effect that a "siphoning wash" was necessary to clear the subterranean passages of the still operable cheese caverns, and so allow the secretly resurrected cheese makers guild to resume their historic duties, which all know to be to produce the best Cheddar, along with a marvelous Stilton, and a surprisingly naughty Parmesiano for grating.

What is more productive and wholesome than a forty five minute trip through a beer tasting on a bright but blustery Spring day in Springfield, Vermont? Joe and the other folks at Joe's Wine & Spirits host such an informative event at least once or twice a month, even when it isn't snowing - one always walks away fortified with new information, and at least one new beer to try, (McNeil's was today's favorite, hmm). With over one hundred breweries, who says there's no fun in Vermont?

The Northshire Brewery offering, Equinox Pilsner, was a pale and truly flowery splash of freshness at the start, followed by that large plain open area encountered in delicate beers, closing with a contrast that did nothing to erase the opening encounter with Violets.

There was a mid-grade amber offering as well, a Brown Lager from Trapp Brewery in Stowe, Vermont - beautiful to regard with it's dark auburn light, but deceptively light in flavor and with almost no bight to reveal an alcohol content, and with almost no effervescence to speak of. It was a pleasant and refreshing beverage to be sure, but would easily pass as a wheat-based health drink to uproarious effect.

The winner among the gathered observers was the Black Belgian Stout, Growlers, with hearty mein and beefy toast and a friendly 7.5% content.

Vermont's Democratic candidate for the office of Governor, Peter Shumlin, joined by Steve Howard, Alice Nitka and Peter Welch and many others, met today with citizens of Springfield, Vermont, at what turned out to be a perfect, crisp Fall day on the grassy verge of Comptu Cascade Park. The backdrop included the silent factories, quietly brooding among ever more naked old trees, almost floating, lost in the bright late afternoon glare (like the ghosts of jobs offshored long ago), sitting there empty on the opposite shore of the now wild and raging Black River.

This close to the election day, Peter Shumlin took the time to mention the bald depravity of some parties in sending jobs offshore for decades, all the while claiming to create jobs.

And Mr. Shumlin touched on another fundamental point for voters to consider on the Second of November, that something as basic and important and traditional as the direct vote, the Direct Vote, that the direct vote is under assault, and that it is very important not to enable bad behavior by other parties who would eliminate, eliminate, the direct vote. That, dear reader, would be a tragic marker in the decline and passing of the Middle Class.

Lament not the passing of that hideous storefront that once clung to the entrance of the Springfield Theater like the stench of Hai Karate and polyester, it is gone of course, having succumbed to the harsh actions of fire and fire crews some years ago. The one bright thing about that absurd fire was the revelation of what remained of the modest 1920's era Pseudo-Indiana Limestone (cast concrete) facade that was hacked away sometime in the 1960's or so.

Celebrate the arrival of Alan Barr, proprietor of Stone Details www.stonedetails.net, and Leslie Fry www.LeslieFry.com, the artists who have begun the delicate methodical work of restoring the limestone facade.

This work will only benefit from the careful search for period photographs that display any details of the original limestone facade. Even blurry, incomplete or otherwise marginal images can contain valuable information, as the original work may have been produced from then-existing copy books - if so, then if there is enough of a hint in an image it could be possible to research the original design.

Certainly, some among us still treasure a photograph snapped with a Brownie on a sunny afternooon long ago, taken with the backdrop of the facade of the Springfield Theater, after a matinee performance, long, long ago.

Please pass the word to your friends and neighbors, and quickly, the work is in progress and needs every bit of help for recreating the missing details!

Well, no one needs to point out that recent heat wave and it's miasmatic atmosphere, thick and oppressive as it was, interrupted the normal routines quite effectively here in Springfield, Vermont. Many lawns and shrubs suffered as underground springs withered away, and daytime patterns of activity were altered when possible.

One neighbor had the brilliant idea of illuminating the outside painting project in order to pursue completion of the task during a less roast-y time of day. It turns out that the actual air temperature did not decrease very much at all from that daytime high, but it was good to get to paint without the merciless glare of the Sun.

Everyone is busy readying for the Event - Springfield Vermont's Springfield High School Alumni Association will present the 56th Annual Alumni Day tomorrow, Saturday, June 26, 2010. Brush-up your fez, polish that antique fender, and charge your camera batteries, tomorrow's parade will be a corker.

Attendees and visitors will be glad to know the following informal, unofficial, but probably accurate information.

On the morning of the Parade, at 1000 HOURS, ALL southbound traffic on Route 106 and westbound traffic on Route 11 WILL be shut down, in preparation of the Parade commencing at 1030 hours. The only exception will be those motorists needing to drop someone off that will be in the Parade.

PARADE ROUTE
The Parade will start this year on Clinton Street by the former Bryant Grinder Corporation Facility. The Parade will then proceed west from Clinton Street and will continue onto Main Street. The Parade will then continue on Main Street, onto River Street. The Parade will then continue out River Street, and will turn towards Chester Road. The Parade will then end at Riverside Middle School.

DETOUR ROUTES
Cars approaching from North Springfield will detour around the Parade route in the following manner: Turn onto Mill Road, to Main Street, to Elm Street, to Fairground Road, to Chester Road, to Park Street, to Union Street, to South Street, to Seavers Brook Road, to Route 11.

Cars approaching from Route 11 heading west will follow the above routes in opposite order of the above to get around the Parade route.

Parking will involve a little walking to the Parade route, no matter where you leave the car, but if you park on Mineral Street you get to walk over Comptu Falls, and if you arrive early you may get a space on Main Street or Clinton Street before they are closed off.

Avoid the rush, arrive early to peruse the offerings at the Springfield Community Market in the parking lot between McKinley's Restaurant and Chittenden Bank, in the heart of Springfield, Vermont, Official Home of the Simpsons, and Jewell of the Upper Valley.

A Farmer's Market, a Community Market to be exact, to take place in the open air on Saturdays in the warm months in the parking lot between McKinley's Restaurant and Chittenden Bank, has been established in Beautiful Downtown Springfield Vermont, Jewel of the Upper Valley! - what could be dandier? Well, here they are, complete with a nice website - www.springfieldcommunitymarket.com - thanks to all the volunteers who are making a real contribution to Springfield's wickedly potential-filled downtown.

High time too. And it arrives as something of a surprise, it appears that movement towards this day was brisker than anyone now can imagine, considering the great rafts of old logs that may have had to have been traversed first in the attempt to wrestle and shoehorn a new idea into the dusty arena. Indeed, the proposal for the market was funded in March, and plans were drawn up, with a mighty fine result that has every possibility of taking on a life of it's own.

The opening of the Springfield Community Market in lovely downtown Springfield, Vermont, City of Lights, was last Saturday, attended by many who agree and call it a truly festive event. Everyone enjoyed especially the great live music provided by George Ainley on Fiddle, Julie Levy on Ukelele, Steve Matusha on Guitar, and Barbara Burns on a large, fulsome and rich-toned stringed instrument that stood about as tall as she did. The crowd was further entertained and teased up to a salivating frenzy by the culinary magic of Jason Tostrup, popular local chef, who taught the riveted audience how to make the best Spring Rolls this side of the Mekong.

The rain on this fine June morning did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the small but growing group of well-wishers and friends, shoppers and day-trippers, and of course the vendors and volunteers themselves took the ducklische weather in stride as good practice for the busy times to come.

The farmers and other vendors of goods or purveyors of other services or experience-based productions were themselves out in force, with a small but choice range of offerings, certainly unfazed by the weather and every one of them ready with a cogent pitch and reams of information about their products. Among them, Peter Hingston and family were there displaying a fine array of their own brand "Vicky Day's Preserves"from their Cherry Hill Farm, Katie from Two Ponds Pottery in Mt. Holley displayed a warm and attractive collection of her pottery and some beefy little tomato seedlings rapidly finding new homes, Springfield Vermont's own Ephraim Mt. Farm was on hand, and there was excellent live music by a local performer whose name will be edited in shortly.

There was a very busy Soap Bubble and Popcorn Station too, manned by the intrepid ladies of the Springfield High School Alumni Association, functioning as a fundraiser for the Great Springfield Alumni Week Parade that takes place a scant two weeks from today on June 26th.

When in Springfield, Vermont, in any fair weather, always remember to set aside Saturday Mornings for the Springfield Community Market in beautiful downtown Springfield, the Official Home of Homer Simpson.

Well, if anyone is curious, it will amuse to know that there were two telephone calls recently from the repair center somewhere in Tennessee. In the first call, "Becky" states that she has the camera there in front of her in her work station and that she is about to begin replacing the broken parts. In the second call, "Pamela" calls to say that she too has the camera on her lap, but that she is still "waiting on the parts". I asked if that was comfortable or safe, and what did OSHA think about it, but that only confused the issue, so instead I asked her to check her computer to see why I had just gotten a call from "Becky" saying that the parts were there and that the repair was about to take place. After a while, I just asked "Peggy" to call if it ever did get finished.
A pizza is often free if it takes to long to be delivered, hmmm.

Is Springfield Vermont's most overpriced grocery store getting ready to close it's doors and leave the City of Lights?
If most Springfieldites now usually trek to a "--------'s" or a "M----- B-----" in another city or another state in order to find a nicer selection of fruits and vegetables or more fair prices anyway, will they notice what will otherwise be a huge void in the Springfield Plaza? Who knows?
Rumors are rampant, to be sure, and the focus of the conversation is not the passing of "----'s", per se, (could it be that no one will miss high prices and ancient onions?). On the contrary, the question on everyone's lips is as to whether "M----- B-----" or "--------'s" will step in to take the location freed by the closure of "----'s".
That is a good question, because another related rumor swirling about deals with the troubling matter of alleged increased mean-ness of the allegedly already draconian management at "--------'s", where the workers are allegedly being unreasonably pressured to meet unrealistic production goals.
To be sure, dumping the old worker is nothing more than a time-honored method employed by managers acting on behalf of owners and shareholders, allowing them to abandon commitments to workers, and to unload both those very workers who may have faithfully worked for years for low wages, and their already meager benefits packages. After all, if you the business owner are unwilling to offer decent benefits or to pay fair wages to your workers, or if you are unwilling to honor commitments as the time approaches to act on them, and if you can see the approach of a given worker's retirement age and all the attendant responsibilities as nothing but bother, then the best way to get free from that tar baby situation is to dismiss the party to whom you owe any responsibility - killing both the high hourly wage and any full-time benefits paid to a mature worker, and killing any pension or retirement benefits promises, all in one fell swoop, (it is a sweet tradition, just look at medieval kings in France and England, where the pattern was for the king to borrow to the hilt and then kill the money-lender).
"Got a worker who has had the nerve to stay on until he is almost making a decent hourly rate? Give him or her unrealistic production goals, set the computers so that he or she never achieves goals, and sit back and wait for them to quit out of frustration! Waiter! More champagne!"
Beyond that, by replacing full time workers with new part time workers, the owners of a business can present a profile that is more attractive to potential buyers if the property is on the block ("For sale, one grocery store chain, staffed by part-timers with no benefits and at slave wages!"). Is "--------'s" positioning itself in order to look more attractive in the market?
If "--------'s" is for sale, is it really the best grocery store for Springfield, Vermont?

Can it be, that during what should have been a routine visit to collect images and rare metal oxides from one of the most interesting commercial zones of Springfield, Vermont, something was incorrectly calibrated in the "somatic component" (SC) of the real time incursion protocol (hence the theory of the rookie anaesthetiste accompanying the team), and that the result was that instead of a general feeling of inattention and sleepiness, a general feeling of malaise accompanied by a touch of simple nausea was experienced by one and all local earthlings in any part of the commercial building housing various commercial establishments?

Rumors of ham-handed alien survey teams aside, one thing is certain, that there were several emergency vehicles from theSpringfield Fire Department, briskly attending to crowd control and tending to citizens affected by the mysterious event that some think was a simple gas leak of some sort. According to the usually reliable medical authorities and the spokesman from the Mayo clinic, Julie is an excellent candidate for what is really almost a routine procedure (major surgery it is, but as common as a root canal), and everyone looks forward to a successful outcome that brings Julie right back in the saddle before the last Daffodil says g'bye. Is it true, is there in fact a plan afoot to bring back that old time-honored tradition, the annual "March of the Paperwhites" through downtown Springfield, Vermont?

Celebrating the Paperwhite Narcissus as one of Nature's lovelier heralds of the advent of Springtime, the Annual March of the Paperwhites long marked the beginning of the busy New England Spring for many generations of Springfielderians and other woodchucks and flatlanders - people still speak in awe of Ann Smith's prize winning Paperwhite Sorbet back in '58, and who can forget the many triumphs on the dance floor of the Black River Pavilion, late in the evening, long after the new Princess of the Paperwhites and her little Court were tucked away in Dreamland.

And who can forget the year that Miss Dusty Springfield surprised the boys when she climbed onstage to join them in a round of haying songs and a few choice bits from the Connecticut River Ring Cycle - was she the prettiest Paperwhite Princess that almost was?

The scene of the fire from the hill -

On visiting this morning the site of the demolition of the Pearl Street house that went up so completely and tragically last night, there was heard a buzz of conversation as citizens exchanged information and stories about the house fire and the people most directly affected by it, and more than one citizen asked aloud if recent fires were not in fact caused to some degree by the complacency of a slum lord mentality, in the same way that the theater fire may have been caused by slum lord complacency in not installing a fire detection and water sprinkler system in an ancient building carved most improbably into dozens of rooms - could it be that the practice of "grandfathering" or of taking advantage of an "old boy network" has the unintended result that buildings broken down into multiple dwelling units are allowed to persist as fire traps? Don't landlords oblige their tenants to keep a given property in good shape and safe to some verifiable degree? Is it really an invasion of privacy to have the Fire Department conduct safety checks now and then to try to help affected citizens understand the fire potential they are living with, especially in buildings that have the crowded configuration observed in recent building fires? Would the oft observed approach be preferable ever, to rent out a warren of rabbit hutches rather than upgrade the properties and have them inspected ever?

The house that burned last night, starting at dusk perhaps around 5 or 6 and of course lasting all night long, is described as having been a bit crowded, that parts of the house were more than a bit crowded (the term "hoarder" was bandied about very casually but not derisively, and not with any intent to be flip). It was heard commented that there were at least 3 or 4 apartments, and that one man remained trapped inside and died when the floors collapsed on him. As an example of the effect of panic, it is said that one man was seen to run frantically back and forth between houses with a glass of water at one early stage in the fire.

Could it be, that one or more residents chose to fight this fire themselves, too proud to let strangers in?

This morning the town of Springfield Vermont is as gently as possible tearing down the house on Pearl Street with a steam shovel to let the professionals get in safely, to retrieve the remains of the neighbor who perished in the fire.

No stranger to accidents or tragedy, Springfield Vermont suffers this evening the sad occurrence of the most rapid oxydation a frame-built home in downtown possible in these balmy Winter temperatures, in the burning of yet another fine old structure in the area of the old downtown, creating tremendous shock, grief and burden to the inhabitants, and taking away yet another piece of the historic patrimony that belongs to us all.

Traffic could be seen stopped and watching along the roadway across on the other side of the frozen Black River, even as crowds gathered along the hilltop overlooking Pearl Street, producing lines of cars and traffic jams rarely seen in Springfield, Vermont, as apparently all citizens with a police band radio or within site of the hideous column of smoke, came out to the edge to look down as into a fiery cauldron, to look down on the astonishing progress of the fire fully involving the Victorian Village Farmhouse in roaring flames, as equally brisk in devouring wood at the recently repaired gingerbread porch as at the carved fairee decorations at the peak, dressing the entire home in a hideous golden sheen and drenching the neighborhood with a disarmingly beautiful and rich golden glow.

At one point, a gas tank of some kind was seen to suddenly burn off it's outgassing contents in a long bluish flame of about four or so feet long. The fact that it was sitting outside in front of the house suggests that the lady living on the first floor there, known to use an oxygen tank in the home, had time to leave the house, and it is hoped that there were no injuries in this unfortunate house fire.

Do Pileated Woodpeckers begin carving up territories or exhibiting nesting behaviors this early in the Spring, in Springfield Vermont?

Bongo cannot help but to wonder, if it is one same, singular and individual Pileated Woodpecker, that has been seen showing up more and more in recent weeks in the immediate vicinity of the East Coast Operations Center for www.springfieldvermont.org (COMCENTSPFLDVT).
Sightings have certainly become more frequent - a Pileated Woodpecker has been seen mainly in the nearby stand of trees, loping muscularly from trunk to trunk like a combo squirrel/banshee/F22 creature, all elegantly articulated points and razors, with a smart black and white livery punctuated by a bloody red shock of a cap on top, and sporting a heat seaking eye on either side, taking it all in like a pro.
The strange cry of the bird can be heard often as well, very like a crow's voice and sounding like a phrase from the crow-ese but fuller and more southern in a swampy way, with a depth that seems to have an element that is like a reverbration, like an echo searching for the cypress and mangrove to gloam about in, vaguely dinosaurlische and lonely.
This very morning, while out filling the bird feeder, the call could be heard, and very near by - an exotic thickness in the brittle sharp cold air, arresting and attractive in an odd way.
A few minutes later he was suddenly visible from the steamy french press, through a window, twenty feet away, sitting in a berrie laden tree above that just-filled feeder, checking things out and generally upsetting the local chicadees.
There was barely time to get a shot off, and no time to adjust settings, but there was this brief image capture to share, proof positive of the Great Fun to be had, in Springfield, Vermont, Official Home of the Simpsons, and Jewel of the Upper Valley.

Last night the Snows of Winter finally began to fall, and a poetic fall it was - being the first, and coming so late in the Season (giving citizens the chance to tie up loose garden ends and neaten-up a last bit) the snow had a clean and mud-free theater in which to parade, dance and finally come to rest, on the gingerbread porches and manicured lawns of Springfield, Vermont, City of Lights and Jewel of the Upper Valley.

No one of the people crying out about a possible "home for prison overflow sex offenders" came forward with any facts, so Bongo sent out a fact finding mission that returns with more concrete information - from principals at the Turning Point (adjoining the busy work site that will house the facility that has everyone up in arms), here in Springfield Vermont, Official Home of the Simpsons and Jewel of the Upper Valley, and the news is far more mundane than the rumor suggest. It seems to transpire that what is happening here is the result of a generous donation by an older citizen who has left the area for the swampy weather down South, she has given the Turning Point a building to use for their work with people who are reclaiming their lives, nothing more.
The building itself has been expertly taken apart into several components, and a fine foundation has been poured for it, the only casualty seems to be the sacrifice of the mature pines that sadly had to be removed to make room for this new work that is simply the very same Turning Point that has been a discrete and quiet neighbor for some time now.
Bongo says to put back your pitchforks and turn down the heat under that vat of steaming tar folks, whoever you are with those rumors.

If one were to look for a fool-proof font of Fall foliage, one would soon find the Ornamental Pear Tree. There are several in Springfield, Vermont, and each one produces a marvelous show of color every Autumn.

When the Sugar Maples are already turning bright and vivid, the Pear continues a robust green, and when the other deciduous trees have pretty much made the transition into Stick Season, the Pear Tree continues to display a full head of silver dollar sized shields in tones varying from green to yellow to sharpest crimson.

Even today, when there is no other remaining dried out leaf on a tree (unless it has been appropriated and incorporated into a crafty dwelling for some insect), the Pear Tree can be seen here or there that continues to shine red and gold in a clear late-Autumn day in Springfield, Vermont, City of Lights, Jewel of the Upper Valley.

Autumn, even the Springfield, Vermont, Recycling Center, a fine place to visit any day, is especially resplendent in the warm light cast through the stand of Maples ruddy with Autumn's special blush.

And what a day it was today, the lush moist atmosphere was intoxicating the last days of full arborial color explosions (it rained all day), interesting to be sure, but, while waiting on a small task at the recycling center, one observed citizen after citizen exclaiming pleased surprise and great relief to hear from the very obliging attendent the fine and fancy news that henceforth the Recycle Center will finally accept a wider range of plastics, from every numbered type including 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - and yes - even 7!

The attendant was happy to recite the Good News over and over, luxuriating in the repetition of the passage that included comments to the effect that "And we don't sort it here anymore either, it goes to the vendor just like this!" As ever, all plastics brought for recycling must be rinsed and have no tops on, but this change is applauded loudly (in a Vermontlische way) by all. One citizen was clearly heard to exclaim "Hurray! No more sorting plastics and throwing away half of them anyway!! Yay!"

The Winterberry makes it's appearance, and with it, memories of Winters Past come back to say hello.

We went to one of our favorite farms the other day, to Beth's to see the new flock of chooks, on Greely Road here in Springfield, Vermont, famous for beautiful eggs with the most vibrant and colorful yokes around.

Bongo also insisted on a new chicken drawing for the blackboard outside.

Happier chickens would be hard to find, and the day was glorious to boot, but what a pleasure to have a short conversation with a neighbor we hadn't met yet.

Bongo was most interested in the fruited branch ported about most tenderly by the newly met neighbor, and when asked, she identified it's place in her personal mythology, and it's gathering up as being part of the suite of things one did in the Late Fall when she and her sister were girls here abouts, long ago, in the Vermont we all seek to find on a walk in the woods in October.

Her father called this the Winter Berry. It is one of the things that the birds feed on if they winter over, a point of connection with nature and magic, and mighty delicious looking in the eyes of Bongo.

Bongo loved Granada. Andalucia is a taste of the Arab lands beyond the Levante, without leaving a more conventional environment, and with delightful hills just like in Springfield, Vermont. The Pension San Joaquin, housed in an old home behind thick walls and tall ancient doors hung with bronze hands that allow the caller to announce his or her presence by striking their delicately purchased bronze apples, located on Calle Mano de Hierro, was our base camp in Granada, just a few blocks from where Isabel and Ferdinand rest, and a short walk from La Puerta de Elvira. The rooms were emminently adequate, priced nicely, they came with exotic balconies and silly european fittings, the interior patios were fun to encounter, and the owners were always on hand to help with advice or directions.

In Granada, some of the hilly stairstepped streets shelter treats from fairy tales.

The same streets offer impromptu venues for enterprising musicians and their fans of all ages, Granada loves the guitar after all.

Back in Valencia once again, Bongo was stunned by the wonderful work of the restorers in revitalizing the exquisite Art Nouveau central market building, the Mercat Central, nestled in beside La Lonja (the 15th century Silk Exchange), sittin in about the same place where buyers and sellers have met since Roman times.

Bongo was also stunned by the variety and beauty of the offerings presented by the many shopkeepers who have held spots here for many years, sometimes passing them from parent to child, provisioning generations of Valencianos and curious tourists - but he preferred to meander about the vegetable aisles, for obvious reasons.

Wandering then further up into the Gothic Quarter, to hunt for the Plaça del Negret and the perfect café con leche or caña, depending on just how long the hunt took, Bongo got sidetracked, and just outside of the Plaza Redonda he came upon a trendily outfitted wedding party lolling about in front of the church of Santa Caterina.

In Valencia, when one has the luxury of time, upon coming across a wedding in progress, one always waits on the wedding party in order to enjoy the free fireworks that always welcome the new couple as they leave the church for the first time, yes Gladys, in Spain they set off real life, heavy-duty, black powder firecrackers, great ropes of them, a vast and stormy concatenation of explosions that wake the pagan gods and amuse children and goats, who then explode themselves in shrieks of delight.

The hats were a parade in themselves, and the lady dressed a la Manola was hypnotic even in the loud sunshine of a late-summer day. Indeed, all were smart enough to watch for the while it might take before the fuse was lit, but our little table called us to come and sit under the orange trees and beside the curling water of the Negrete´s quiet fountain, and we moved on without waiting to see the young men dancing in the black smoke of the firecrackers.

It´s not exactly Springfield, Vermont, but Bongo Loves it!

Fancy news indeed - from the thirteenth floor overlooking the Mediterranean Bongo takes in a salty air that reminds him of the days of seaborne traders, marauders, pirates and other adventurers who found places like Cullera and Calpe along the coast South of Valencia to be ideal harbors of convenience and of easy defence, not to mention comfortable for those who chose to stay. Spain was once the breadbasket of the Roman Empire, and Valencia was once the bread basket of Spain, the rich agricultural lands that are cultivated right up to the beach and right up to the most modern parts of town are testiment to that fact. It isn´t Springfield Vermont of course, it is a vacation after all, but Bongo feels almost at home here, except for the huge and distant vistas cross the cresty late Summer Seas, except for the charming lasses buzzing about on Vespas, except for the late night glasses of Virgen Malaga at after'hours flamenco bars.

There is something to be said for the fun of driving around like mad in a late-twentieth century internal combustion vehicle that has been modified to produce the most fun from motive force derived from the burning of fossil fuels and otherwise at the expense of the environment.

You really have to stop and think about it, is it any worse than building and using two or three new scrubber-less coal fired electric generating plants? That may be a difficult question to answer, but if one asks if driving this thing around like a bat out of hell is more fun then building and using two or three new scrubber-less coal fired electric generating plants, then the answer comes a bit more easily - this mean little mudder is way more fun.

Yes, here in Springfield, Vermont, City of Lights and Official Home of the Simpsons, here in this charmed locale that is the fairest jewel of the Upper Valley, here it is still possible to have fun with internal combustion.
